  • They are meant to be consulted quickly.
  • Most reference sources provide useful indexes and/or tables of contents to look up specific information.

Specialized Encyclopedias and Dictionaries provide:

  • brief summaries of topics or concepts
  • provide an outline of a field of study
  • useful starting points when researching a new topic
  • references for further reading
