Juan José Osuna was born on June 24, 1884 in Caguas, Puerto Rico, the grandson of an immigrant from Spain. The event that was to change his life was the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the annexation of Puerto Rico. Children from prominent families ended up coming to the United States to further their education and learn American culture. Although not from a wealthy family Osuna also had this opportunity, and he arrived in New York Harbor on May 1, 1901 at the age of sixteen.
Because he could not read or speak English Osuna was sent to the Carlisle Indian School, but soon took advantage of a program that placed students in homes throughout the state. O. H. Bakeless, a faculty member at Carlisle and an 1879 BSNS graduate, saw the young man's potential and secured a place for him on the farm of Mira Welsh, located near Orangeville. In only five months Osuna had a practical knowledge of English and while he continued to work for the Welsh family, in the fall of 1903 he entered the Bloomsburg State Normal School. The principal of the school was Mira's brother Judson, who also saw Juan's promise. Osuna graduated on June 27, 1906 in the normal course, having excelled in teaching ability.
His education was by no means over as after leaving the normal school he earned three more degrees--a bachelor of arts from Pennsylvania State College in 1912, a divinity degree from the Princeton Theological Seminary in 1915 and a doctorate in education from Columbia University in 1923. That year his professional career began at the University of Puerto Rico, where he served as director of summer school until 1928 and then as dean of the College of Education until his retirement in 1945. He then moved to the Washington, D.C. area and died in Arlington, Virginia on June 18, 1950.
Juan José Osuna was a greatly respected, internationally known educator and, in recognition of his lifetime of work, a street and three schools are named after him in his native Puerto Rico, in addition to the street on the Bloomsburg University campus. His time here meant so much to him that he was buried in the Orangeville Cemetery in his beloved Pennsylvania hills.
