Mark Stephen Schweiker Mark Schweiker was born January 31, 1953 in Philadelphia and raised in suburban Bucks County. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg State College in 1975, majoring in education with a minor in business. He then worked in marketing and as a securities broker, and in 1983 earned a master's degree in administration from Rider University. But it was in 1979 that his public career got its start when he was elected a supervisor in Middletown Township in Bucks County, and then a County Commissioner in 1987. After being re-elected he sought to serve on a larger scale, and in 1994 became the running mate of Republican candidate Tom Ridge. Schweiker was elected Lieutenant Governor in that fall's election, and was able to bring his fifteen years of experience in government to a statewide constituency. As the Lieutenant Governor Mark Schweiker was able to expand the traditional role of the office, and utilize it to manage a number of initiatives to increase government efficiency, urban redevelopment, neighborhood safety, and information technology. He was also oversaw the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and chaired the Local Government Advisory Committee, a key role based on his experience in county administration. Schweiker was re-elected in 1998, and in 2000 announced that he would not run for the Governor's office in 2002. But after the tragedy of September 11 Governor Ridge was called to head federal homeland security, and on October 5, 2001 Mark Schweiker became the 44th Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During his fifteen months as Governor he increased the role of the State Police and National Guard in keeping the state secure and in his finest moment oversaw the rescue of nine miners from the Quecreek mine in July of 2002. Following his departure from office Schweiker became President of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce in February of 2003, and after eight years returned to his native Bucks County, where he lives with his wife Katherine and children Brett, Eric, and Kara. In 2009 he resigned from the Chamber of Commerce to serve as President of the Business Process Solutions unit of Philadelphia-based PRWT Services, Inc. and is currently the Chief Relationship Officer & SVP of Renmatix, a King of Prussia-based technology company. |
