Biography

    Rarig grew up in Catawissa and attended Locust Township High School. He graduated as Valedictorian of his class. He earned his Bachelor's in Business Education at Bloomsburg State College in 1951. He received the prestigious Service Key award from BSC. He obtained both his Master’s (1963) and his PhD (1968) from Columbia University. He died in 1984 at the age of fifty eight. From 1951 till 1961 he was a business teacher at Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School. He was the director of business education from 1968 to 1970. Rarig then became the dean of the college from 1970 till 1985. From 1985 till his retirement in 1988 he was a professor of management. He was involved in the community and served as the president of the Kiwanis club.

    Dr. Emory Rarig's Papers are contained in one box. The documents included in his collection cover his professional and personal life during and after his career at Bloomsburg University. The box contains information on his professional career and the many awards he received over his lifetime.

            This box contains documents concerning Dr. Emory Rarig's professional career. His article entitled Scholastic Achievement and Professional Promise for the American Society of Personnel Administration is held in the collection. Several articles and letters about Joyce Benstead are also held in his collection. Business Department banquet information and pamphlets are also a part of this collection. Many of his awards are listed and his award plaques are also in the collection. Records containing biographical data exist in the box. His business publications include: What Does a College President do? by W. H. Cowley, Story of a Chicken Yard by D. K. Young, Fruits of Philosophy by Knowlton, Moral Physiology by Robert Dale Owen, An Inquiry into the Nature and Progress of Rent: and the Principles by Which it is Regulated by Rev. T. R. Malthus and Leading Collective Endeavor by Robert W. Jewell. Letters announcing his retirement and Emeritus status are held in this box. Documents on his return from retirement to teach at Bloomsburg University are in this section. Information on the ceremony where Dr. Rarig got his distinguished service award exists in the box. Documents on his guest speech from Roselon Industries, Inc are held in this section. Several of Rarig's articles about the Long Range Planning Commission at Bloomsburg State College are also found in the collection. Documents from his time at Mechanicsburg Area Schools include programs, commencement notices and his letter of resignation. The collection also has photos and certificates from Dr. Rarig's time in the Navy. Several items of personal interest include Riverside Church pamphlets, autographed photo of Whittemore and Lowe, invitation to the inauguration of President Wilson Regan and an invitation to the inauguration of Dick Thornburgh.
