Hans Karl Gunther
|
Born in Germany, but his father sent him out of the country before WWII. He made it to the untied states by 1941. He got his Bachelor of Arts in history in 1946 and Master's degree in history in 1947, both from Washington University in St. Louis. He taught German at the University of Missouri between 1947 and 1951. He earned his PhD from Stanford University in 1954. In 1965 he became an associate professor at Bloomsburg State College and became a full professor in 1969. Gunther wrote thirteen major articles that were accepted for publication. He suffered from health problems in the late seventies and early eighties. At the age of sixty he took his own life.
Dr. Hans Karl Gunther's documents are held in ten boxes. The first box consists of personal and general biographical information. The second box is mostly from his years teaching abroad for the military. The third box holds documents from his career as a professor at Bloomsburg University. Boxes four through six contain his lecture notes on many different subjects. The seventh box has copies of published and unpublished materials he wrote. Box eight contains materials published under his pseudonym, John Phillip Lundin. Box nine has materials from the Institute of Historical Review and box ten has a conservative newsletter and cassettes of lectures.

Personal Information
This box contains information on Dr. Gunther's personal life as well as his dissertation. There are a collection of obituaries that appeared in the paper as well as photos. Documents on gambling trips to Las Vegas are also in the section. A bound copy of his dissertation, German-Swedish Relations, 1933-1939: The Background for Swedish Neutrality, is also kept in this collection.

This box has information relating to Dr. Gunther's years teaching at military bases. This box contains information on Dr. Gunther's teaching years at Bloomsburg. There are syllabus' for the following classes: The Modern World, Europe Since 1939, Selected Topics on European Imperialism and the History of Germany. There are also copies of his multiple choice exams as well as a student's essay exam in the box. Also, his sabbatical request to write a military history textbook area included. Dr. Gunther's articles he wrote for the Maroon and Gold also exist in this section.

This box contains information regarding Dr. Gunther's membership to the Institute of Historical Review. The Institute of Historical Review advocates historical revisionism, primarily in regards to the Holocaust. They are currently the world's largest association of Holocaust deniers and Dr. Gunther had a substantial amount of Holocaust denier material. The material in this box includes IHR newsletters and correspondence, and promotional pamphlets.
