POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title and Rank:

Temporary Reference Librarian; Faculty Rank.

Qualifications:

Required--ALA-accredited Master’s degree; a minimum of six (6) months experience in a reference related activity; and a demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations. Finalists must successfully complete an interview.

Preferred--Experience in using the Internet and online reference sources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Reference Librarian works under the leadership of the Coordinator of Reference Services or, in the absence of the Coordinator, of the Director of Library Services. Responsibilities include:

1. Assisting patrons in the use of the Library’s collections and in locating specific information during assigned hours at the Reference Desk.

2. Performing online searches.

3. Assisting patrons in end-user searching.

4. Participating in Library’s instruction program.

5. Supervising student assistants as required.

6. Assisting in the selection of new reference materials and in the weeding of the Reference Collection.

7. Keeping informed about current events in the Library world which are pertinent to job responsibilities.

8. Cooperating as a team member with other librarians and staff in performing other professional duties as directed by the Coordinator and/or Director.
