Centennial Gymnasium

The gym in the 1950s.
Centennial was completed in 1939 and named to commemorate the first 100 years of existence of the Bloomsburg State Teachers College from its beginning as an academy. The gymnasium contained a large main gym with playing courts; two smaller auxiliary gyms, a men's and a women's; and adjoining locker rooms. The building also held the first swimming pool on the campus. Centennial still houses classroom facilities and offices for the health education department. In the fall of 1999 renovations will begin on the building when the gym and swimming pool will be replaced with classrooms and faculty offices. Once renovated, it will house the athletic department, a nursing wellness center, the anthropology department, and audiology and pathology department. In addition, Centennial will include a theatre style lecture hall, a multipurpose room, an adult fitness studio, and five classrooms, each with seating for 100 students. The available space of the building will increase from 43,000 to 70,000 square feet.
